St. Simons Island, Georgia
St. Simons Island was our last adventure in Georgia for this trip. St. Simons Lighthouse: Gould was awarded the contract to build the lighthouse in 1807. In 1810, President James Madison appointed Gould to serve as the first keeper. During the Civil War a Confederate earthworks fort was built west of the lighthouse. On September 29, 1861 the lighthouse was blown up to keep it out of the hands of the Union Navy. The Fresnel lens installed in 1857 was dismantled and removed prior to the destruction of the tower. When Federal troops landed in Brunswick they searched for the lens but it was never found. The current lighthouse and dwelling was constructed in 1872. It is 104 feet tall and 21 feet in diameter at its base. Fort Frederica Broad Street at Fort Frederica. Established in 1736 by James Oglethorpe to protect the boundary between the new British colony of Georgia from the Spanish in Florida. It consisted of a fort and town. Christ Episcopal Church Established in 1736 with the current building being built in 1884. Lover’s Oak It is said that Lover's Oak dates back to the 12th century.
